Lecture 12 will focus on the introduction to mass transport.

At the end of this lecture, students should be able to:
  • Explain the principle of mass transfer
  • Formulate the concentration distribution for diffusion through stagnant gas film.
The driving force of mass transport is due to concentration differences.
The mode of mass transfer can be categorized into 2:
  • Diffusion
    - Molecular Diffusion
    - Knudson diffusion (gas)
  • Convection
Mass transport is the most complicated type of transport when compared with energy and momentum transport. This is because diffusion deals with mixtures with more than one component.

Reflection
In this lecture, I learned about the mass transport mechanism and principle. Molecular transport or diffusion is the movement of individual molecules through fluid by means of random motion of the molecules. Fick's law of diffusion is the main law that governs the molecular transport throughout the system.
Although this topic is quite complicated as there are a lot of terms used in mass transfer equations which are interrelated, I believe I can try to catch up along the learning process.
